How to Replace Roof Shingles

Replacing the shingles on your roof that have suffered damage is a very important part of roof maintenance. The better you maintain your roof the less often it will need to be replaced. This is very important, especially when you take into consideration the high cost of replacing a roof in the first place.

A shingled roof is one of the most popular types. It is certainly among the most economic, but does require regular maintenance and needs to be replaced every ten to 20 years. Some of the newer shingles are able to withstand various elements for up to 30 years, but unless your roof has been replaced recently, its shingles probably don't fall into this category. Replacing the shingles on a roof is not a very difficult task. It is, however, important to know how to properly replace roof shingles before beginning work on the job. First you will want to identify the shingles that are damaged. Sometimes they will be curled up around the edges and may require smoothing out.

This is easier to do in hot weather because the shingles are more pliable during this time. Asphalt is commonly used as is fiberglass when manufacturing shingles. Both of these types of materials can easily be uncurled and cemented back onto the roof. During cold weather, however, uncurling shingles can present somewhat of a problem because they become brittle and you run the risk of breaking them. This is why a torch must be used to heat them a bit. Be careful not to catch them on fire.

Once they are heated they can be straightened and cemented back onto the roof.

Should you find you are unable to complete the task and don't wish to replace roof shingles on your own, you should call in a professional roofing contractor who will do the job for you. You wont have to pay for a brand new roof and will only be charged for the actual repairs that must be completed.

When choosing a contractor, make sure to select someone who is familiar with the type of shingled roof you have and knows how to replace the shingles easily. Fortunately, the job should not take more than a day, even only a few hours if there are only a few to replace. Once this job is done, your roof will look like new and wont contain any more damaged shingles.

Keeping up with this type of maintenance is important. It is a lot less expensive to replace a few shingles than it is to replace the entire roof and if you can keep from doing that while maintaining your roof, you will come out better economically in the end.
